Company founded
Robert H. Lummus Sr. began pumping sand from Proctor Creek at Bolton Road in Atlanta and selling it locally, launching the family’s first entrepreneurial venture.
1938
Coal added to the mix
In response to Atlanta’s growing demand, Lummus expanded operations to include coal distribution, diversifying beyond sand.
1945
Formation of Lummus Sand & Coal
R.H. Lummus Jr. joined his father, and together they formalized the enterprise as Lummus Sand & Coal, solidifying the family partnership.
1961
Full pivot to building materials; incorporation
The sand and coal business was phased out, and the company incorporated as Lummus Supply Company, launching its first full-service hardware and building materials store at Bolton Road.
1980s–90s
Expansion and multi-location growth
Lummus transitioned into a full-fledged regional supplier, steadily adding new locations across the metro‑Atlanta area.
Early 2000s
Weathering and emerging from recession adversity (inferred from interviews and operations)
